M113
The M113 is a lightly armored fully tracked air transportable and moderately amphibious carrier equipped to ferry personnel and other cargo. Originally deployed for use in the Vietnam War, the M113 is currently employed in support roles, such as armored ambulance, mortar carrier, and engineer and command vehicle. The vehicle’s most common weapon fit is a single .50 caliber M2 machine gun, though the mount can also support a 40 mm Mk 19 automatic grenade launcher. The M113 is composed of 5083 aircraft-quality aluminum alloy, giving it steel-like strength at a somewhat reduced weight. It requires a two person crew and has space for 11 passengers.
The M113 was originally developed by Food Machinery Corp. (FMC) in 1960, but in 2005, BAE Systems acquired United Defense (FMC’s defense subsidiary) and began production. Several variants of the M113 exist. The M113 A1 (1964) replaced the original gasoline engine with diesel. The M113 A2 (1979) boasts cooling and suspension improvements, as well as smoke grenade launchers. The M113 A3 (1987) received a yoke for steering, a more powerful engine, external fuel tanks, and internal spall liners. The M113 has an operational range of roughly 300 miles and can reach speeds of 42 mph (3.6 mph in water).
